Weekly Update Articles

Summer Psalms & SBC Annual Meeting

“To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.” Psalm 25:1

This past week my family enjoyed a brief break together. We were able to escape to Tennessee for a few days of fun together.  These kinds of breaks are incredibly vital to me and my family.  I hope you will find time to do the same this summer at some point. I’m back in the office this week and looking forward to seeing you Wednesday and Sunday.

SUMMER PSALMS

This past Sunday Cole kicked off our new sermon series – Summer Psalms. Each week through August we will be studying a different psalm. For good reason, many consider Psalms their favorite portion of Scripture. Each one expresses God-glorifying, transparent perspective on the ups and downs of living by faith in close relationship with the Lord.

You can make the most of this series by being aware of the specific psalm to be preached each Sunday. The preaching schedule is available on sermon cards in the worship center, and it can be found in the newsletter email each week. No one should arrive for gathered worship any week unaware of what is being preached that day. Read, reread, and reflect upon the psalm leading up to the Lord’s Day. Come with a mind and heart prepared to rejoice together as we worship through the text-driven preaching of God’s Word.  This week’s text is Psalm 25, “Follow the Lord’s Paths”.

SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION ANNUAL MEETING

Next week, June 14-16, is the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. The meeting scheduled for Orlando last year was canceled due to COVID, so it has been two years since the SBC has convened. The SBC is made up of over 50,000 churches throughout the United States who share a common confession of faith and place a high priority on seeing the gospel advance in the world. Each summer these churches hold the world’s largest deliberative business meeting where messengers from local churches approve annual budgets, elect officers, and approve entity trustees (mission boards, seminaries, and agencies), hear reports, and authorize resolutions. Intermixed there is music, sermons, and a host of auxiliary gatherings. It is quite something to behold. I would encourage all church members - in particular church leaders – to make a personal goal to attending an SBC annual meeting at some point.

As a cooperating SBC church, it is my conviction that we have not only the privilege but also the responsibility to send messengers to participate. We have an obligation to supervise the use of our mission dollars. This year Cole and I and our wives will be attending. Please pray for this to be an encouraging time. Invariably I find myself encouraged in the Lord, better educated in our mission efforts around the world, and inspired by the fellowship we enjoy with like-minded churches across the country.

This meeting this year is shaping up to be one of consequence. Over 14,000 messengers are currently pre-registered, about double what is normal. The interest is due to several reasons: 1) Nashville is a popular and convenient location in the southeast, 2) it’s a SBC presidential election year with 4 announced candidates, and 3) controversial issues. One can expect to hear updates on how sexual abuse is being addressed in the SBC, social justice and critical race theory, and women preaching. While disputes and drama may make the headlines, THE most important thing that will take place next week is that we continue to fund and advancement one of the strongest, best-trained mission forces in the world. The Great Commission may not make the headlines – but it should. I hope it will. The best source of news next week related to the SBC can be found here: Baptist Press (National SBC News)

I ask for you to pray for the SBC next week. Pray that God is glorified, that believers will live in unity, that God’s Word will be loved and will drive every decision, and that the watching world will see Spirit-filled Christians model love, truth, and integrity.

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Rest and Draw Near this Summer

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” -Matthew 11:28-30

Rest and Draw Near This Summer

In the early pages of Genesis, we read of the creation account of humanity. Adam and Eve are created, given the dominion mandate, and commissioned to work the Garden of Eden (Gen 1:28-29, 2:5,15). Work has always been a part of God’s good creation and design for humans; it is good and right for us to work. But, rest is also a part of God’s good design. On the seventh day of creation, we see the Lord resting after the work he had done to make the world, the Israelites are commanded to rest on the seventh day of the week, and we too are to rest (Gen 2:2, Ex 23:12). Rest and sleep are a natural part of our regular cycle, but ultimately, we find rest in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and his completed work. (Matt 11:28-30).

So, this summer, take time to rest well in Christ. Recharge and refill from the trying and difficult season we have been in over the past year. But while you rest, draw near. First, draw near to the person of Christ, lean into a deeper study of His Word, and lean into your relationship with Him. In this time of rest, embrace Christ more fully in all His glory and the depths of His riches. Second, draw near to your family. Use the extra time children have away from sports and school to engage in more family worship, connect together, and simply have fun. Lastly, draw near to your church. Lean into discipling relationships and prioritize corporate worship on Sunday. Lean into opportunities to engage people with the gospel through mission trips and events.

This summer, embrace the goodness of God-designed rest, and use this time to draw near to your family, to Christ, and to his church.

Grace to you,

Cole Barnes Worship and Families

Join us on Mystery Island this Summer!!

“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” - Matthew 19:14

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Vacation Bible School is right around the corner! The dates this year are June 27 - July 1, 6-8 pm, nightly. Notice, we are beginning VBS on a Sunday evening this year. VBS is open to children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade. There will be a nursery available for the children of VBS volunteers.

Our theme this year is Mystery Island, and our focus is seeking out the truth about the one, true, triune God of the Bible, as he has revealed himself to humanity! Each night, we will teach children about the character of God, leading up to his redemptive, unshakable love for his people. Every night will be filled with music, games, crafts, snacks, and bible lessons. But, to make this happen, we need YOU!

Whether you are a VBS veteran or a first-timer, we have a spot for you to serve. We need volunteers who are simply willing to love children and display the truth of Christ, and the light of the Gospel in word and deed. There are registration links below for both volunteers and children. Sign up to engage the next generation with the Gospel today! Volunteers, be on the lookout for emails and communication from us about VBS and training steps you may need to take to serve this year.

Whether you are able to physically serve or not, there are several things you can do to help make this VBS a success:

  • Pray for the children and families that will be impacted by VBS this summer. Pray that hearts would be softened to the Gospel, that people would come to saving faith, and that the one, true God would be lifted high!

  • Invite friends, family, and neighbors to come and be a part of VBS this summer. VBS is a great opportunity for children to hear the Gospel; maybe for the first time!

  • Give faithfully to your church so that we can fund missional, gospel-centered events to engage our community.

Grace to you,

Cole Barnes, Worship and Families

Important Items for Consideration from the Elders

“So I exhort the elders…shepherd the flock of God that is among you…” 1 Peter 5:1-2

This past Lord’s Day was another blessing in the life of our church. Gathering as the church family and eating the Supper together build us all up. Thank you for the positive feedback and encouragement on the Hosea series. It has been a blessing to study and preach the riches of this incredible, God-breathed prophesy. As we approach the final four chapters, pray for our continued attention to hearing, believing, and applying Hosea.

In the members meeting we received in four new Crestview members!  Welcome Reese Carroll, Emma Lael Sisler, as well as Danny and Bethany Lane.

I want to follow up on several important items the elders brought to you for consideration on Sunday.

MOTIONS RELATED TO ELDER LEADERSHIP

The elders introduced two related motions to the church for consideration: Motions Related to Elder Leadership. The church will vote on both at a special called conference on June 27 following gathered worship.

We are pleased to commend David Trice to you to be reaffirmed as an elder. David is a wise, biblically qualified brother who has been a faithful shepherd of this church for the past 6 years.  He and Brenda are a wonderful example of Christ-centered marriage and are encouragements to us all. We rejoice that he desires to continue serving. Please prayerfully consider this nomination. Anyone who knows of any reason David may not be biblically qualified to serve is encouraged to follow the steps set forth in the constitution and by-laws.

ELDER PAPER ON MARRIAGE, DIVORCE, AND REMAIRRIAGE

As the pastor/teachers of the church, elders are responsible to instruct the church in sound doctrine. On Sunday we presented an elder paper: On Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage; & The Meaning of “The Husband of One Wife” In Elder and Deacon Qualifications.  This paper is the culmination of several years of discussions and study. We regularly receive questions on this topic and felt this avenue was the best way to communicate clearly. While this paper is not a change to the church’s Statement of Faith, it is the opinion of the elders on how we believe the Scriptures should be applied in the arena of marriage. We hope it will provide guidance to you.

We encourage you to read the paper meticulously and give attention to examining the Scripture references.  For further reading we recommend the following journal article: David Andrew Naselli, “What the New Testament Teaches about Divorce and Remarriage” Detroit Baptist Seminary Journal

As you can appreciate, it is impossible to anticipate every question and life situation. We welcome questions, clarifications, and constructive feedback. Our desire is to honor the Lord by helping the church to think and walk according to the Word of God.

WORSHIP CENTER PROJECT

We are growing and feeling the pinch! Sunday you heard the exciting launch of our next major campus improvement effort: The Worship Center Project. The facility planning team and elders have developed a plan to expand the maximum seating capacity to 250 – adding 60 more seats. The Worship Center and the rest of the 1st floor, including nurseries, will receive a fresh, tasteful, contemporary update. The project cost estimate is $150k-$200k. Over the next several weeks you will be hearing more about how you can be part of making this project a reality. Please pray that we will take responsible care of the disciple making tool that is our church campus - for the glory of God’s great name!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Reasons to Attend this Sunday

“And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples…” Acts 6:2

REASONS TO ATTEND THIS SUNDAY

There are many reasons you should be present this Sunday, but I want to encourage you with three. First, it is the Lord’s Day, and He is worthy of all worship and devotion. Your church needs your voice, service, hospitality, gifts, and involvement.  Second, we will be eating the Lord’s Supper together. Every believer who is physically able to do so should make attendance at the Lord’s table a priority. Let’s not take this lightly. Eating together as one assembly nurtures the church and is a way you continue to identify as a follower of Jesus and member of his church.

MEMBERS MEETING

The third reason to be present this Sunday is our quarterly members meeting immediately following gathered worship. When significant decisions were needed in the churches of the New Testament, the entire church was gathered to make them. Due to covid we had to postpone the February meeting, so this is our first one in six months. You will receive important updates on the life of the church, hear recommendations from the elders on several important decisions, receive new members, see others out of membership, and learn about plans to add additional seating in the worship center. If you are not present, you will miss something and we will miss you. We will move through the content as quick as reasonably possible so expect the meeting to take 30-45 minutes.

Thank you for planning ahead and being present this Sunday!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Crestview Compassion

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10

CRESTVIEW COMPASSION

Over the last couple of months, we have been updating our approach to benevolence ministry to focus more upon addressing the core issues behind needs. The biggest difference is that we have added to into our process a team of church volunteers who will conduct intake interviews and begin life coaching with those who need help. The goal is to build longer term relationships and employ evangelism and discipleship as an integral part of helping our community. The result of this is what we are calling Crestview Compassion.

The goal of this ministry is not simply to meet a single financial need, that often is a reoccurring issue. The goal is to build relationships, help people see the root of their financial struggles, share the gospel, and fulfill the great commission through discipling these individuals. We simply have a unique opportunity, due to their situation, where people are coming to us instead of us having to go to them. There are two ways people can find help through Crestview Compassion:

  1. Anyone who needs assistance can APPLY. When an application is received a series of meetings are set up with our team of trained volunteers to get to know the person, hear their story, assess the situation, and help them to identify potential solutions. Anyone inside or outside Crestview who lives in our local care may apply. If you know of someone who needs assistance, direct them to apply through the application on the Compassion page of the website.

  2.  Any member who knows of a situation of need can submit a RECOMMENDATION. For example, if you know of a situation where a member of Crestview needs assistance with adoption costs - make a recommendation. Or maybe a classmate’s home burns and you’d like to assist the family with emergency assistance - make a recommendation. We want to come alongside one another to minister well in our community. Any member may make a recommendation through the Compassion page of the website.

Here is the new webpage: Crestview Compassion

The funds association with Crestview Compassion are overseen by our deacons and approvals of assistance are approved by them. Designated gifts to support this ministry are welcome.

Training is underway now. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer who assists with intake interviews and life coaching, let me know: thomas@crestvewbaptist.org.

WORSHIP CENTER SEATING

How you walk into church on Sunday makes a difference for our life in the church family. Pray about where you sit. Do you regularly consider how your seating choice impacts others? Have you noticed that when someone arrives a few minutes late they find it difficult to find a place to sit?

It is an exciting time within our church.  Every week we are seeing a steady increase in attendance. One of the ways we can serve one another is to make room for one another. Here are 3 SIMPLE TIPS for serving others in your seating selection each Sunday:

  1. Sit in the balcony.

  2. Sit in the front pews.

  3. Sit to one side of a pew rather than the middle.

Thanks for loving one another - even in where you sit on Sundays!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

The Significance of Gathering

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins…” Heb 10:23-26

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF GATHERING

We see, from the pattern of the Early Church and the writings of the New Testament authors, a great significance placed on the regular gathering of God’s New Covenant people, the Church. The local gathering of God’s people is where believers teach, grow, encourage, serve, assure, love, discipline, admonish, instruct, rebuke, and so much more. We sing, pray, hear the Word, and exhort one another in the Truth. All these things happen within the context of the regular, weekly gathering of the local church.

When separated and drawn away from the body, danger is close at hand. Temptation stalks a wandering, lonely Christian as the lion preys on the weak gazelle at the fringe of the herd. The author of Hebrews recognizes the unavoidable dangers lurking in the shadows and gives this sobering warning: “For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins…(verse 26, emphasis added). The regular gathering stirs up the individual members of the body in good works and encouragement so that they may continue persevering in the faith, doing the good works of Christ Jesus for which we were created (Eph 2:10).

To deny good works and deliberately continue in sin “trample[s] underfoot the Son of God…and profane[s] the blood of the covenant”, that is to deny the sacrifice of Christ and one’s faith in Him (Heb 10:29). Regularly gathering with the body is a defense against such callous disobedience to our Savior. The local church is a grace from the Lord for our perseverance and assurance.

GATHERING REGULARLY

We gather corporately each week on Sunday, the Lord’s Day, to pray, sing, read Scripture, hear a sermon, encourage one another, and participate in the ordinances. This is the most important gathering of the week, but, it is not the only gathering of the week.

We also gather as a church on Wednesday evenings for small group discipling. The Wednesday evening gathering, while different from the Sunday morning worship service, is not an insignificant sideshow. In a more participatory fashion, kids, students, and adults study the New Testament, discussing its teachings and how it applies to our lives specifically. This is an integral time focused more specifically on spiritual growth and sanctification that is necessary for Christian development at any age.

As adults, many things can get in the way of Wednesday discipling; often, it can feel more like a rushed chore than a joyful opportunity. Responsibilities, work, and Ubering kids to sports practices can all feel overwhelming at times, and trying to fit Wednesday discipling in can feel impossible or even unnecessary. I implore you, fight back against that temptation! Make the time for your family to be spiritually trained, discipled, and encouraged on Wednesday evenings by gathering and fellowshipping with the body. What your family needs most is not sports practice, a hobby, or a break, they need a love for Christ and His church consistently modeled for them.

Therefore, gather with the body when the body regularly assembles. There isn’t a church attendance quota for the week or an attendance sheet checked. Gathering isn’t an “either/or” decision between Sunday and Wednesday, it’s “both/and”. On Sundays, gather with the body to corporately worship and hear the word of God proclaimed, and on Wednesdays, gather with the body to study and drink deeply from the well of Scripture.

All ages and stages have a place to study with us on Wednesday evening. Don’t allow excuses, responsibilities, and temptations to creep in and draw you away from Wednesday evening discipling.

Grace to you,

Cole Barnes, Worship and Families

Thoughts on Preparing for Wednesday

Last week, I shared these thoughts with students and their parents, and Pastor Thomas felt it might be encouraging for others as well.

PREPARING FOR WEDNESDAY

  • Elementary Kids study personal and missional applications from the previous Sunday morning Gospel Project lesson. Parents can help them prepare by using the questions on the activity sheet and the LifeWay kids’ app throughout the week to discuss the lesson with their kids.

  • Students and adults have a New Testament Reading plan that will guide you through the week in reading and studying God’s word. Each day, you’ll read, depending on the length of the book, 5-10 verses or up to a full chapter.

  • As the Families Minister, my desire is to resource and help parents to be the primary disciple-makers of their children. To that end, adults and students will be using the same bible reading plan. This will make it easy for your family to be learning and discussing the same scriptures all throughout the week together!

  • Most often, mornings are the most effective time to carve out 15-30 minutes to read and pray, at least for me. Sometimes, if you wait till the responsibilities of the day (school, work, sports, homework, hobbies, etc.) have begun, it is difficult to find time to slow down and study the bible.

  • Parents, I know many times Wednesday night discipling will feel more like a rushed chore than a joyful opportunity; whether it’s student ministry or adult discipling.

  •  Students, know upfront, if this is not a habit you have already built, it will be difficult. Your body will want to stay in bed or engage in other things. Your mind will wander. Temptations, distractions, and genuine responsibilities will draw you away. Fight for your time with the Lord! His word has been written for us so that we might know the Creator God of the universe!

WHAT TO EXPECT ON WEDNESDAYS

STUDENTS

  • Prior to Bible study, we will spend time fellowshipping and playing games indoors and outside at times (especially as it’s warming up).

  • We will spend 30-45 minutes engaged in small group bible study discussing the passages from the reading plan from the previous week. To participate well, students should bring their bibles, study notes/HEAR Journals, and applications/questions from the previous week’s reading to share and talk about with their small group.

  • Student ministry typically ends between 7:45 and 8:00 pm, depending on when the discussion ends in each group.

ELEMENTARY KIDS

  • Elementary children begin by gathering upstairs withs several leaders to play group games, participate in lesson-related activities, and fellowship with one another. This is always a fun time for the kids!

  • They are then lead in an application-focused lesson based on the previous week’s Gospel Project lesson. They discuss ways the biblical story applies to their life, to the fulfillment of the great commission, and how they should respond to the text.

  • They normally end the night out at the newly arranged playground area to blow off some steam and enjoy time playing together. Most Wednesdays, families end their evening circled around the picnic tables at the playground, talking and enjoying the fellowship of one another.

Wednesday evening discipling is a wonderful time for everyone to engage in small group Bible study and enjoy fellowship with brothers and sisters mid-week.

Grace to you,

Cole Barnes, Worship and Families

Resuming Wednesday Night Activities

WHAT A GREAT DAY!

This past Lord’s Day was a wonderful day of worship and fellowship as a church family. The Spirit of God was clearly at work in hearts during gathered worship. The Lord is stirring our church. May we continue to walk in faithfulness to him, keeping in step with His Spirit, and obeying his commands.

RESUMING WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES

Wednesday night we will resume our mid-week activities at 6:30 PM.  Everyone will begin the evening together in the worship center and then scatter to our various meeting locations. Elementary Kids will be applying the Gospel Project lesson from this past Sunday. Student ministry will enjoy a bit of fun and games and then focus on discipling by studying Galatians.  Any parents who need nursery for children (walking through 5-yrs) please contact Cole Barnes: cole@crestviewbapitst.org

Adults will continue our Bible-centered discipling. This is a PERFECT opportunity to get involved in a discipling group.  We plan to form men’s, women’s, and couple’s groups. In the announcements below you can find a link to the discipling format and daily Bible reading plan. This week we will be completing 2 Corinthians and starting Galatians.

 SURPLUS FOR ADDITIONAL MISSIONS

Each quarter that church giving exceeds expenses a portion of the surplus is directed to additional mission and ministry efforts. This week, on behalf of Crestview, I was able to pass along additional financial gifts to support two of our ministry partners:

These gifts are over-and-above our regular monthly gifts to these ministries. Praise the Lord!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Reigniting Normal Ministry Activities

WEEKEND GET AWAY

Tricia and I enjoyed this past weekend away at the Georgia Baptist Mission Board pastors/wives retreat on Jekyll Island. We enjoyed the down time, seeing new sights, connecting with other ministry couples, and being renewed. The Lord has blessed me with a wonderful bride. Tricia is an amazing gift of grace to me, our children, and this church. I love you, Tricia!

GOD’S UNSHAKABLE LOVE: HOSEA

This Sunday I plan to begin a new sermon series studying the Old Testament prophet Hosea. This amazing book reveals to us the faithfulness of God in his unshakable love to discipline his people and restore them to himself. It prepares and points people to Christ by calling those in the latter days to return to the Lord by seeking “David their king.” Before Sunday, I encourage you to sit down with your Bible and a cup of coffee and read through the entire book in one sitting. Hosea is only about 10 pages long and can be read in less than 30 minutes. Please pray all of us to benefit from the preaching of God’s word each Sunday.

REIGNITE OUR NORMAL MINISTRY ACTIVITIES

This Sunday, April 18, we are resuming our regular ministry schedule:

  • 9:00 AM Coffee Corner Open

  • 9:30 AM Equipping Courses (See below for classes and locations)

  • 10:30 AM Gathered Worship

  • 5:00 PM Community Groups

Because the Governor has rolled back COVID restrictions on gathering sizes and social distancing,  seating in the worship center has been increased. Seats are now spaced at 4-feet which brings total seating capacity to 200. For the time being, we will continue to cast the live stream of the service in the fellowship hall for those who prefer social distance seating.

This Sunday we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper and encourage any who may choose to sit in the fellowship hall to make the short walk to the worship center following the sermon to eat the supper as one assembly.

On Wednesday, April 21, we will resume our regular Wednesday ministry schedule. Kids, Students, and Adults will meet for discipling.

COMMUNITY GROUPS

This Sunday night Community Groups will resume at 5:00 PM (not 5:30 as announced Sunday). Upcoming meeting dates are April 18, May 2, May 23, and June 6. Groups will either meet on campus or outdoors at a location identified by the group leader. Designated on campus meeting locations:

  • Vaughn Group: Playground or Ed Building Second Floor

  • Trice Group: Worship Center

  • Ramseur Group: Fellowship Hall

  • Hill Group: Student Room

The purpose of these groups is to foster supernatural community by providing an environment where we can know one another better, grow in the faith, and better understand what it means to be fully devoted to Christ in our lives. We eat dinner together, discuss and apply the morning’s sermon, and pray together. Groups are inter-generational. Currently, groups are encouraged to do “picnic style” meals with each family being responsible for their own food. See leaders for group-specific details.

Families attend community group together. We encourage students and older children to participate in all aspects of the group. During the discussion and prayer time younger children may be able to play in a separate room. At least two adults will oversee these younger ones while discussing and praying together themselves. This responsibility rotates among the adults.

Please contact a community group leader to learn more!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Reconnecting with your Church

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some…” Hebrews 10:24-25

RECONNECTING WITH YOUR CHURCH

This past Sunday was a milestone for us and many other churches. Easter Sunday marked a return to gathered worship for many of those who have been staying away due to COVID. Churches across our region saw attendance increase anywhere from 50-100% over what they had seen the previous weeks. It was wonderful to see so many of you around the tent together!

While larger crowds are normally expected on Easter, this year the increase was not only noticeable, but it was also noteworthy. Perhaps we are reaching the point as a church and community where we are comfortable meeting together again. The next challenge will be making the Sunday gathering of the church a fresh, happy, faith-filled habit. If Sunday was your first day back in a while, I want to encourage you to be back this week. Make it a habit!

ROLL BACK OF COVID RESTRICTIONS

Last week Governor Brian Kemp announced the roll back of many COVID-19 restrictions across Georgia beginning April 8, including restrictions on church gathering sizes and social distancing requirements. This means, within reason, we are free to resume our normal activities. Of course, this does not mean COVID is gone. It is still a concern for many. We each need to continue practicing personal responsibility and respectful social awareness of others.

What does this roll back mean for us?

First of all, nothing changes to our plan for this Sunday, April 11. We will worship outdoors under the tent at 10:30 AM.  There will be no equipping courses. This will be our final Sunday outside. Cole Barnes will be preaching the concluding message in the “What is the Good News?” series from Acts 17, “Is Religion Enough?”  Bring your unbelieving friends and camping chairs!

Second of all, nothing changes to our plan for Wednesday, April 14. We will meet in the worship center as one group for discipling.  There will be no kids or student ministry that night.

Sunday, April 18 is the BIG DAY! We will reignite our regular ministry activities. On that morning the Coffee Corner will be open starting at 9:00 AM. We will restart Equipping Courses at 9:30 AM, including nursery and kids. Gathered Worship will be indoors at 10:30 AM in the worship center (with increased seating). Sunday evening at 5:00 PM Community Groups will meet on the church campus.

On Wednesday, April 21, we resume our normal mid-week activities.  Kids and student ministry will return.  Adult discipling will continue in the worship center and will breakout into smaller groups.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Pews are being reinstalled in the worship center and spaced at 4-feet apart. The worship center will have a seating capacity of 200. Everyone is encouraged to sit in the worship center as one assembly each Sunday.

Seating in the overflow area of the fellowship hall will remain at 6-feet for now. I do not expect the overflow area to be needed for additional seating at this time. Yet, at least for a short time, I realize that some may be more comfortable with the extra room.

In classrooms we will continue to spread out chairs and provide ample seat spacing.

In nursery and kids ministry we will continue to follow the “healthy ministry commitment” sign-in as well as temperature checks.  Face coverings will not be required for volunteers.

In the event that cases rise again in our area at some point in the future, we are prepared to return to COVID gathering protocols as needed.

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

The Foolishness of the Resurrection

“Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?” Acts 26:8

THE FOOLISHNESS OF THE CROSS AND RESURRECTION

The foundation of Christianity is the resurrection of Jesus. Three days after being beaten, tortured, and executed by crucifixion, Jesus was raised to life by the power of God. The tomb containing his body on Friday was empty on Sunday.  Angels announced his resurrection to the stunned women in the garden, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.” Over the next 40 days he personally, physically met with his disciples and was seen by many who knew him, even appearing to more than 500 people at once!

Still, many consider the resurrection foolishness. Some claim it was a conspiracy inspired by desperate religious fanatics.  If so, then why did 11 of the 12 “fanatics” die martyr’s deaths knowing the resurrection was a lie?  Others claim the resurrection is a myth that has grown over the centuries. If so, then explain why this “myth” stormed onto world history within a matter of days among those who knew Jesus best. Still others believe Jesus’ death was a misdiagnosis. The professional Roman execution crew mistakenly thought he was dead and Jesus later recovered consciousness and escaped from the tomb.  If so, then how could this “misdiagnosed” man, wrecked by days of torture, summon the strength to move the massive tomb stone and appear completely healthy to his disciples that same day? In this case his disciples might have considered him Houdini – but definitely not Christ the Lord.

No, church, the cross and resurrection are not foolishness. The explanation is not found in a conspiracy, a myth, or a misdiagnosis. It is found here: Jesus was dead and is now alive. Why should anyone think this is so incredible?  If God is god, then he can do this!  In fact, he has!

RESURRECTION SUNDAY WORSHIP OUTDOORS

This Resurrection Sunday (Easter) we will be meeting again outside at 10:30 AM. The forecast is for perfect spring weather. Do you have a someone close to you who considers the resurrection to be foolishness?  Invite them to come with you to witness the presence of God in the gathering of Christ’s church and hear the greatest news in the world – firsthand.

Immediately following the service there will be an egg hunt for the kids (from toddlers up to 5th grade).  There will also be a photo booth available for family pictures (use your own camera).

RECONNECTING WITH YOUR CHURCH

Last year we were not able to gather on Easter due to COVID shelter-in-place requirements. While concerns remain and care is needed, much more is known now about how to safely meet and navigate COVID concerns. Meeting outside allows us to meet as one assembly while also providing limitless fresh air and space for social distancing. Even our most careful members, family, and friends can attend these outdoor gatherings if they are of a mind to do so. Great effort is being extended each Sundays to create an outdoor space where all the church and a great number of guests can be present.

I want to be careful here to recognize that some do have legitimate justifications for continuing to sheltering-in-place. If you fall in this category, we love you and are praying for you. However, at one time or another I expect we have each experienced the temptation to stay separated from the church. I have. You have. COVID has provided us all with the convenient excuse, at times, to forgo participation with the church. As your pastor, I want to lovingly warn you to beware of the temptation to remain separate. Satan will whisper a lie in your ear that your sinful nature will embrace, “church is dangerous.”

Just as pain medication is needed following surgery, so too temporary separation from the church has been needed at times this past year. Yet, just as long-term use of pain medications can become addicting, life-altering, and deadly, so too, ongoing separation from the the body of Christ is spiritually dangerous and habit-forming. Only you know your heart and your motives. If separation is not necessary and has become an unhealthy pattern for you, then repent and return to your church this week. If one can now go to work or school; if one can now play sports, attend a game, or workout at the gym; if one can now go shopping at Walmart, Lowes, Kroger, and Kohls - then one should now also be gathering with the church each Sunday. Continue following our COVID gathering guidelines - but be with your church.

RESUMING OUR NORMAL SCHEDULE

Finally, we plan to return to our normal Sunday/Wednesday schedule on Sunday, April 18. I trust by that date most of our church member will be able and willing to return to equipping courses, community groups, kids, and student ministries.  Please see the announcement below for more information.

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Under the Big Top - One Assembly

…When you come together as a church…1 Corinthians 11:18

UNDER THE BIG TOP – ONE ASSEMBLY

Over the past year we have been unable to meet as one assembly.  We do not have a room on campus that will accommodate a full gathering of our church while following COVID protocols. As a temporary accommodation we have been utilizing the fellowship hall as overflow space and many have watched the live stream from home. This Sunday we return to one gathering!

Everyone will join as one body -  singing together, praying together, hearing the Word together, eating Lord’s Supper together – as we should be. The next 4 weeks a large tent will be set up in the parking lot and there will be more than enough room for all members and guests. We are using this as a season of outreach for us too!  There is plenty of room to invite your ONES, friends, and family to hear the gospel!

We will have plenty of metal chairs, but you are encouraged to bring your own camping chairs if you prefer. The outside temperature could be on the cool side, so please dress accordingly – jackets, hats, and blankets as needed. So long as the weather is dry, we plan to be outdoors.

I want to encourage every able-bodied Crestview member to be present.  If you are ill or unable to attend, we understand and be assured we will live stream these services as normal.  Though we are outdoors,  6-foot spacing between family seating needs to continue to be followed. Toddler and Preschool nurseries will be open.

Pray for the “What is the Good News?” outreach, invite your friends, and I’ll see you this Sunday!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Ministry Opportunities Abound

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-12

MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND

There are several opportunities on the horizon for you to “get your hands dirty” doing good:

“WHAT IS THE GOOD NEWS?” OUTREACH

We are beginning a 4-week gospel outreach on Sunday, March 21. Weather permitting, we will meet outdoors on the Crestview campus as one assembly. A large “revival” tent will be set up. There will be plenty of space for all the seating we could need.  Not only should you attend, but this is a prime evangelism opportunity for you to bring guests. Invite you ONE as well as unbelieving coworkers, classmates, family, friends, and neighbors.  Not only will meeting outdoors allow our entire church to meet together but perhaps it will also allow some to attend who are otherwise hesitant to meet indoors. We plan to live-stream these services for those who are unable to attend in person. In case of inclement weather we will move indoors.

Pulling off these outdoor services each week will bring with it a host of new ways to help. We will need joyful, servant-minded members to arrive early and stay late to help with set-up, hospitality, follow-up.

Please be praying for the lost to be saved and for the church to be strengthened!

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS TEAM

Do you have a heart for reaching the nations with the gospel? An opportunity on the horizon is serving with our International Mission Ministry Team. This team is being newly organized and will meet Wednesday night at 8:00PM (March 10) in the worship center and via zoom. The role of this team is to provide ongoing support to the elders to help the church remain faithful in the Great Commission mandate of making disciples among all nations. If you would like to learn more, plan to join us on Wednesday night.  To request zoom info email me: thomas@crestviewbaptist.org

BENEVOLENCE MINISTRY TRAINING

Do you have a heart for helping those in need? We want to expand our ministry to be an avenue for evangelism and discipling while helping people learn how to meet their basic needs. We would like to train 8-10 members in how to conduct initial interviews and life coaching. Monday night at 8:00PM (March 12) we will have 1-hour zoom training for all who would like to learn more. To request zoom info email me: thomas@crestviewbaptist.org

NURSERIES REOPENING THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we will be reopening the toddler and preschool nurseries for families who would like to utilize them. We do not anticipate the need for an infant nursery at this time. Thank you to all our wonderful nursery servants who will be serving these families – you are a blessing!

Finally, the tentative plan is to restarting equipping courses and other group ministries in mid-April following on the heels of the outdoor services. Look for more information as the date approaches.

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Serving & Inviting Your One

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

We have spent the past 30 days praying for our ONES (people around us who are not believers). During March I am challenging you to take two more steps: SERVING & INVITING YOUR ONE

 SERVING YOUR ONE

Once you’ve identified your ONE, let them know you care through acts of service:

  • Take them out for a cup of coffee.

  • Write a note of encouragement.

  • Hand out notes of encouragement to those who serve you at grocery stores, restaurants, letting them know they are prayed for and loved by Jesus.

  • Send a text asking how you can pray for them.

  • Drop off a gift card for your ONE at their door and leave them a hand-written note explaining why you did it.

  • Type up a note saying you’re offering to help your neighbors in any way they need. Leave it on neighbors’ mailboxes or on their doors. Offer to do yard work, run errands, etc. Ask for prayer requests. Put contact information on the note.

  • Take cookies or another goodie to your neighbor and take time to get to know them.

Any time the Lord puts your ONE on your mind, take the time to pray for them, then send them a text or them to let them know you have been praying for them and ask how they are doing.

 INVITING YOUR ONE

Invite your ONE to hear the gospel proclaimed and talk with them afterwards about it. We are planning four Sundays with this in mind.  Sunday, March 21 will begin a new sermon series titled, “What is the Good News?”  Each Sunday the gospel will be clearly explained as we study evangelistic sermons preached by the apostles in the book of Acts:

  • March 21: Who is the Lord? Acts 2:14-41

  • March 28: History Repeated? Acts 3:11-4:12

  • April 4: Are You Persuaded? Acts 26:4-29

  • April 11: Is Religion Enough? Acts 17:22-34

Even If your ONE cannot attend in person, share the live stream video link and then follow up with them afterwards.

May the Lord build his church!

For His Glory,

 Pastor Thomas

The Word of His Grace

And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. Acts 20:32

THE WORD OF HIS GRACE

If you are following the daily Bible reading plan we are utilizing for our Wednesday discipling, and I hope you are, then you know we are currently reading through Acts.  Join us Wednesday night at 6:30 in the worship center as we learn to grow as disciples utilizing God’s word.

This morning’s reading was in Acts 20, Paul’s farewell message to the elders of the church of Ephesus. In verse 32, there is a remarkable statement about the power of God’s grace in Scripture. These men were learning the disappointing news that they were seeing Paul for the last time this side of heaven. There would be no further visits from their spiritual older brother. Paul commends, or entrusts, these men to God’s ever-capable, all-wise hands. What is more, he entrusts them to “the word of his grace”. While there were threats on the horizon, these elders had all the provision they needed in God and in his word. The Scriptures are at their heart the revelation of God’s grace! This grace is the root of salvation and sanctification. A few verses earlier, Paul describes the gospel as, “the gospel of the grace of God” (vs. 25). If they would abide in God and pay attention to this word of his grace, then they would have all they needed for the countless responsibilities that lay ahead of them.

Are you treasuring God and the word of his grace today?  Have you spent time reading, studying, and reflecting on the grace-packed Scriptures today? If so, you can be confident God is using this to prepare you for today, tomorrow, and eternity. Take up and read.

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas

Help for the Aftershock

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Isaiah 41:10

HELP FOR THE AFTERSHOCK

We were shocked and deeply saddened yesterday to learn of the death of a beloved member of our church. The news of someone loosing their life, whether by accident or intent, brings a range of emotions. When it was one we all know and love, it is all the more heart wrenching. You may feel confusion, anger, betrayal, guilt, responsibility, and fear. How do we come to terms with this?  How does knowing God make a difference in how we grieve?

Everyone wrestles with the question “why?” This side of heaven, this question can never be completely explained. There is no quick answer and easy solution. God does not offer for us platitudes and pat answers. He gives us something much better.  In response to our sorrow, emotions, and unanswered questions, he gives us himself. In life’s broken, dark experiences we find that the promises and presence of God our Savior are real. In the midst of darkness, God calls us to live a life where faith and love still shine.

God is not naïve to the realities of what has happened.  He is not naïve to our struggle with grief and pain. It is in the middle of these that our faith and trust in God grows. Read again the promises from Isaiah 41:10 (above).  Why should we fear not?  Because God is with us.  Why should we not be dismayed? Because God is ours. How will our ever-present God strengthen, help, and uphold us? By his holy, just, powerful, glorious right hand!  God speaks these words to you, “I am with you.”  He is the only one who can reassure your heart.

PRACTICAL STRATEGIES GOING FORWARD

  • Cling to Jesus. God has come in the person of Jesus Christ and entered into the difficulties, sufferings, sins, and disappointments of this life. Jesus bore your weaknesses. He was tempted as you are. He triumphed. Now he comes near to you with promises of mercy and goodness. “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? “(Rom. 8:32). Nothing can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • Pray to your Father. Our heavenly Father is near and delights when you pour your heart out to him. Complaint, lament, mourning, and desperation are all emotions expressed in the Psalms. It is safe to be honest with your Father.  (For starters, see Psalm 6, 10, 22, 38, 42, 43, 130.)

  • Connect with People. Don’t try to handle this alone, be part of your church family. Draw together more tightly. Gather with those who have been affected.  Talk with one another.  Don’t avoid talking about this tragedy. Grieve together. Pray together.  Be the church for one another.

  • Trust in God’s Mercy. A question that is often asked is, “Can someone go to heaven if they take their life?” This is where we must be reassured that salvation is a gift of God’s merciful grace. Eternal life is nether merited by one’s deeds nor forfeited by one’s sins. On the cross, Jesus paid for all the sins of all those who would ever believe upon him for salvation. The love of God for his children is unquenchable and indestructible. God never lets go of his sheep. He will hold us fast.

 NEED TO TALK?

We all need the help of one anther to walk through this. This is not a time for isolation, but for talking to a spouse or good friend.  I welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone who would like more personal pastoral counseling during this difficult time. Do You Study?

"Great are the works of the LORD, studied by all who delight in them." Psalm 111:2

DO YOU STUDY?

The word "study" may bring to mind memories of pouring over books, class notes, and study guides as you crammed for final exams. Notice in Psalm 111:2 (above) that studying the works of the Lord is an act of worship. The passage is clear - all who delight in the Lord's great works will study them. If you enjoy the Lord and delight in knowing him, you should hunger to know what he has done. As your knowledge about his acts grows, your joy and wonder in him are enlarged!

Where do we go to study these great works of the Lord? The Scriptures. These are the record of God's great works. Have you studied God's works today?

Church, we have homework.

Who's Your One in 2021?

"The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest." Luke 10:2

WHO'S YOUR ONE IN 2021?

Church, we don’t merely need another method for evangelism. We need a white-hot passion to see people who are far from God experience the new life He offers through Jesus Christ.

Every Crestview member is being challenged to identify ONE unbeliever in your life for whom you will pray, serve, and share this year. ONE specific person. My prayer is that God will use us as his instruments in the salvation of many souls in 2021. Join me in asking that we see many new disciples baptized in the coming months. Who's your ONE?

Not sure how to answer the question, “Who’s your ONE?” yet? Here are a few suggestions to help.

  • Family: Who could love your family members more than you do?

  • Close friends: Who do you want to tell when you have news (good or bad)?

  • Neighbor: Who lives right next door to you?

  • Coworkers: Who works across from you, or who do you run into in the break room?

  • Cashier or server: Who are the people you see at your regular shopping and dining spots?

  • Classmate: Who do you see in class, the library or lab?

  • Teammate: Who plays in the same league as you?

  • Online friend: With whom do you engage on social media?

  • Fellow parent: Who are the parents of your child’s friends?

  • Workout buddy: With whom do you go to the gym or run?

This Sunday we will be our commitment Sunday. We will be posting our ONE's names on a display board as a tangible reminder and encouragement. If you are not able to gather in-person this Sunday, email your name and your ONE's name and we will be sure it is posted: info@crestviewbaptist.org

Monday, February 1, we will launch a 30-Day focus on praying for our ONES. Prayer guides will be available Sunday or can be downloaded here: 30-DAY PRAYER GUIDE

Gospel Project For Kids

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6

GOSPEL PROJECT FOR KIDS

As parents, it is our responsibility to train and raise our children in the fear and admonish of the Lord and all His glorious ways. Parenting is one of the most eternally significant things we as humans have the privilege and responsibility to do. Each day I have the opportunity to be the father to my daughter, Eden, I increasingly feel the weight of this duty.

Not only do I have the responsibility of being a father, but as the Families Minister, I also have the great privilege of seeking out good resources for young families to incorporate into the daily discipleship of their children and family worship throughout the week.

The resource I want to draw your attention to is the LifeWay Kids App. Through this app, you have access to all the Gospel Project materials we would normally use during the equipping course hour on Sunday mornings in the Elementary Kids’ Class. There are lesson videos, memory verse games and puzzles, digital coloring sheets, big picture flashcards, and so much more! This is a wonderful tool to incorporate into your week to engage your children with the Gospel or to use as an “at home Sunday School” if you are watching from home on Sundays.

To get set up, simply download the LifeWay Kids App from your AppStore/Play Store, create an account, and download the current quarter’s curriculum from the lifeway in-app store. At times the download is $.99, but it is currently free for the winter quarter. Even at $.99, this is money well spent for the material you’ll receive. Once you’ve downloaded the curriculum, click through and familiarize yourself with the features and capabilities, and start teaching your kids the gospel project at home! I pray this is a useful and effective tool for the daily discipleship of your children.

Grace to you,

Cole Barnes, Worship and Families
